How to organize your kid's sports videos so any clip is seconds away
A season of games and lessons can put a couple thousand clips on a parent's phone. Most of it is good footage that's impossible to find. Here's a system that works on any iPhone, whether or not you use an app for it.
Why the camera roll stops working
The camera roll sorts by the date a clip was taken and nothing else. It doesn't know which clips were games and which were lessons, who is in them, or what happened. By midseason, finding one at-bat means scrubbing through every Saturday.
2,000 clips you can't find aren't memories, they're clutter. The fix is giving each clip a little context while you still remember it.
Start with one album per athlete per season
- In the Photos app, create an album for each athlete and season, for example "Spring softball 2026".
- Add clips to it the same day you film them: select the clips, tap Share, then Add to Album.
- If you film a lot of practice, keep games and practice in separate albums.
- Tap the heart on the best clips so they're easy to pull later for a highlight video.
Caption each clip the same day
An album tells you the season. It doesn't tell you the game or the result. Add a short caption with the opponent, the date and what happened, like "vs. Tigers, double to left".
In Photos, swipe up on a clip to add a caption. Captions are searchable, so typing an opponent's name later brings the clip right back.
Saving clips from GameChanger and other team apps
- Most team and streaming apps let you save or download a clip. Look for a share or download option on the clip and choose Save Video so it lands in Photos.
- Steps vary by app and version, so check that app's own help pages if you can't find the option.
- Once the clip is in Photos, add it to the right album and caption it like any other clip.
- If you use PlayerPath, import the saved clip from your camera roll and file it with the right game.
Protect the season
- Back up your photo library. A lost or replaced phone is the easiest way to lose a season.
- Keep original files. Clips shared through text messages are often compressed.
- Delete on purpose. When storage fills up mid-tournament, it's easy to wipe the wrong clips.
When albums aren't enough
Albums and captions work if you stay disciplined, but they don't count anything and they don't connect a clip to a stat line.
PlayerPath does both in one step. Record or import a clip on iPhone or iPad (iOS 17+), tag what happened, and it's filed with the right game and athlete while the stats build themselves. One account can manage more than one athlete across baseball, softball and golf, and clips are stored in the cloud. Free to start.
Keep the whole season findable
PlayerPath files every clip against the right game, date, and athlete — and builds the stats while you do it.
